The British Dal Festival culminated in our Grand Dal Finale at Paintworks in Bristol on Sunday March 25th.

The morning and afternoon sessions both featurde:

Dal cookery demos and talks
Street food stalls offering dal and pulse dishes of many varieties and cuisines
Market stalls selling a range of dal ingredients and more
Children’s activities

We celebrated and feasted on dal of all kinds, with dal-icious vibes and music to reflect the diversity, versatility and deliciousness of dal and the pulses that make it.

11 am Kalpna Woolf, compèred by Nick Saltmarsh

BBC Food & Farming Awards winner and founder pioneering Bristol community organisation 91 Ways to Build a Global City, Kalpna will cook dal and spinach tikis (aka dal patties)

12 pm Dr Caroline Gilmartin, compèred by Hannah Braye

Dr Caroline Gilmartin is a fermenting specialist with a background in microbiology and genetics. Caroline is fascinated by how clever microbes are, both those living in our guts, and probiotics in fermented foods. She is on a mission to get Bristol and is also behind Every Good Thing, which supplies fermented foods including Kimchi, Curtido, Sauerkraut and Kefir to some of Bristol’s loveliest shops and cafés.

1 pm Chetna Makan, compèred by Kalpna Woolf

Chetna Makan was born in Jabalpur in Central India. She has a degree in fashion and worked in Mumbai as a fashion designer before moving to the UK in 2004. Chetna was part of 'The Great British Bake Off' in 2014 and since then has written 3 books. The first book 'The Cardamom Trail' was a celebration of baking with Indian flavours and her second book 'Chai, Chaat & Chutney' was discovering Indian Streetfood from the 4 corners of India. Her new book is Inspired by Indian cuisine, 'Chetna's Healthy Indian' is proof that healthy food does not need to be health food, and convenient meals can be good for you, too. She also has a very popular Youtube channel 'Food with Chetna' where she shares her creative flair for all things cooking and baking.

2 pm Jenny Chandler, compèred by Jo Ingleby

Cook, writer and teacher, Jenny is author of the superb Pulse cook and a former UN pulse ambassador. She'll demonstrate the versatility of dal through three simple dishes, each using British pulses and with a choice of garnishes.

3 pm Nidhi Verma, compèred by Nick Saltmarsh

Nidhi Verma is a cookery teacher and food writer who teaches Indian cookery classes in South West London. Meri Rasoi means ‘My Kitchen’ and Nidhi shares traditional recipes that have been handed through her family for generations or that she has discovered on her travels around India.

4 pm, Ramesh from Thali, compèred by Gemma Thorogood

5 pm Genevieve Taylor, compèred by Jo Ingleby

Genevieve is a food writer, food stylist and presenter with a love of simple and beautiful food. She writes cookery books, pieces for national magazines and newspapers, presents films and creates food for film and photography that is used in TV, advertising, packaging, PR and marketing campaigns.

fresh-range sources award winning food & drink directly from local farmers, fishermen, makers and bakers and delivers to Bristol & Bath kitchens 6 days a week. They'll be selling a range of superb dal ingredients including organic garlic, root ginger, root turmeric and dal home cooking kits

A range of six authentic hummus varieties with authentic flatbread. Moist rotate their specials every week depending on what’s good at the farm and will have at least one seasonal special on offer, also using British pulses from Hodmedod.

Fermented vegetables and milk and non-milk kefirs and grains.

Hodmedod, Britain’s pulse and grain pioneers, work with farmers to offer a range of bean and pea varieties, heritage grains, some of Britain's first quinoa and new crops like lentils. Hodmedod is committed to providing sustainably produced, wholesome, quality food with provenance.

Leading UK organic and Fairtrade product wholesaler, Essential Trading will be selling sustainable wholefoods.

Offering a large range of craft preserves homemade in Bristol. Ranging from jams, jellies and chutneys to sauces and hot sauce. The preserves and sauces are produced seasonally using as many locally acquired ingredients as possible.

Brinda will be selling her range of homemade spices. The spices face been carefully selected, roasted and ground to make the most aromatic blends of spices.

British Dal Festival partner 91 Ways to Build a Global City will be serving a global afternoon tea.

Providing a craft beer real ale bar and bottled beers, including pales, ambers, IPAs and seasonal specialities such as coriander and lime.

Happy Butter is a small Devon based artisan company making soil association certified organic ghee from UK organic butter.

Pulses UK (formerly BEPA) is the trade association representing the processors and users of British-produced pulse (mainly combining peas and field beans) crops.

Where Is It?

Paintworks is located on the A4 (Bath Road) near Totterdown. Follow signs for Temple Meads Railway Station, then continue along the A4 bearing left at Three Lamps junction. Continue for approx half a mile, Paintworks is on the left hand side. It is approximately a 12 minute walk from Temple Meads station.

There is limited parking available on site, please use public transport if at all possible. If you're coming on foot, by bike or in a car you can download a map. There are lots of ways to get here without a car, take a look at our greener travel choices.
